U10 Plan-Dec 22-31, 2018

Late night at work 😞

U10 December 21 – 25th

Happy Holidays,

We had another productive weekend, working on stance, balance and turn shape. The upper mountain has been firm so it is very important for the athletes to have sharp skis! The local shops have seasonal sharpening at reasonable pricing, if you are not comfortable tuning their skis. If your U10 does not have sharp skis they lose confidence and inhibits their ability to progress. Feel free to ask our coaching staff if you have any questions regarding tuning. A typical racer sharpens their skis after 3-4 uses.

Training Schedule:

Friday Dec. 21- GS Training . Please remember that you must RSVP through the RSVP form<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__docs.google.com_forms_d_e_1FAIpQLScTkRSz9CY5f5Yqm-2DdU-5FkuuV7SHAzt5wAzVAlcDOHGca2Y3-2DA_viewform&d=DwMFaQ&c=d-cmF97CsPp2DCyLDwktLIEbZ0S3HElGOrguwqovoIE&r=Rk97VIoJdkcabTKufasVpd2xUF_-0HDw7IrQl770OPQ&m=nzEfWT5cWbD0NyzSFhf4ira885ffPYMp1hjYAiWkBB4&s=UuxAZEVjc4Guf657NIsZfTbJoSVoggkpTxx8pXty7XI&e=> before Thursday morning.

Saturday Dec. 22- Will continue to work on skills and turn shape with brush gates

Sunday Dec. 23- More training and fun

Dec. 24- Training may be combined with other age groups due to coaching availability

Dec. 25- Merry Christmas everyone! No training, but if you are in the neighborhood feel free to get a few runs in with the family 😊!!

Dec. 26 – First day of the Holiday Camp. Lots of training and fun@

Important Dates:

Dec. 28th- SWSC Skating/Pizza party!! Riley Rink in Manchester 5:30pm-7:30pm

Holiday Camp 12/26/18 – 12/31/18.

Jan 1st – Happy New Year! No training. Enjoy the day with your family and 10 points if you get a few ski runs in.

A Few Notes:

• Please ensure that your athlete is dressed warmly and have hand warmers, (if necessary). Dressing in layers is the best way to keep the athletes warm. Also, if we the forecast is for “clear snow” (rain), please dress appropriately. It is usually warm; however, having rain gear is very helpful.

• In order for your son/ daughter to participate in the Southern Vermont Council (SVC) events, they must have:

1. a USSS membership (Link: www.usskiandsnowboard.org)

2. a VARA Membership (Link: www.vara.org)

• It takes at least a week to process a USSA membership, so please do not wait until the day before a race to register. Our first Southern Vermont Council (SVC) competition is at Mount Snow on Sunday, January 6th.

See you at the mountain,

Harriet

U10 Plan-Dec 7-9, 2018

Hello everyone,

It was a great to see the returning U10 athletes and welcome the new U10 athletes that joined us. We spent the first weekend acquainting the athletes to their equipment and back to skiing.

Friday Training:  8:55am-11:30am and 12:25pm - 2:30pm. If your son/daughter is planning on attending, you must RSVP through the RSVP FORM. A parent must with meet with the coaches when dropping off their athlete, to review the plan for the day. This is required for every Friday training session for U10s. Depending on the number of coaches, the athletes may or may not be supervised on the lifts.

Saturday and Sunday Training:  The athletes should meet in front of the Mountain Sports School by 8:25am and we will return to the same spot by 11:30am.  We will resume at 12:25pm and end at 3:00pm. This weekend we will be continuing our focus on getting back into the ski mode and having a fun time

A Few Notes:

·         All SWSC Athletes must be US Ski & Snowboard competition members, as well as VARA members:

1.      US Ski & Snowboard membership (Link: US Ski & Snowboard)

2.      VARA Membership (Link: VARA).

·         It takes at least a week to process a US Ski & Snowboard membership, so please do not wait until the day before a race to register.  Our first Southern Vermont Council (SVC) competition is at Mount Snow on Sunday, January 6th.

A Few Expectations:

·         Please ensure that your athlete is dressed warmly and have hand warmers, (if necessary).  Dressing in layers is the best way to keep the athletes warm.

.    U10's need 1 pair of tuned/sharp junior race skis and a hard ear racing helmet (no soft ears). Skis should be tuned weekly so the kids can learn and perform.

·         We have 3 World Cup races at Stratton and the athletes may wear a GS suit.  At SVC events athletes may NOT wear GS suits, but may where them underneath their clothes as an extra layer (a warm layer).

·         We usually stop at the mid-mountain lodge for a cup of hot chocolate (free for SWSC) and some athletes purchase snacks or bring them. We prefer that they do not purchase or bring candy.

We have great veteran coaching staff that are ready for a fun and productive season,

Harriet DeVerry
Mike Singer
Bob Jacobs
Alex Anvari
Jackie Bielak
Kirstin Schmidt
Hilary Quisenberry

See you at the Mountain,

Harriet

Welcome to the 2018/19 Season!

Welcome to the 2018-19 season!!

I hope you're all enjoying the summer and getting excited for the upcoming season! This will be my 7th year as Alpine Racing Program Director and Head Coach and can't wait to get things started! We made big changes in the club over the past few years and this year there will be a lot of new and exciting additions! We've upgraded our equipment, changed our club culture, upgraded our technology, and improved the programs' direction. I want to thank everyone for supporting the changes each year and the great program that we've put in place for the kids.

The new website has been a great resource for parents and athletes. Please get to know the site and use it for all program age class information. Weekly training plans will be posted here each week by Wednesday by the age class Head Coaches and you can find the season schedule on the calendar page.

Alterra, the parent company of Stratton, has been incredible over the past months. The NEW Snowbowl chair is getting installed as I write this and the new IKON pass has broken all sales expectations!! Alterra is a super supportive company and we are all enjoying the new leadership!

Don't miss our fall programming! We will continue this fall with our Fall Fitness days and our SWSC Club Equipment Fitting day. If you're buying new equipment this year, the Equipment Fitting day is the place to do it! Get sized for new boots & skis by the factory representatives and order it all at a discount on the same day! These are very popular events and important for SWSC. The Annual SWSC Fall Golf Classic Tourney is still in the works and we are working on moving it to Connecticut so more of you can play! Keep an eye out for more details.

Fall Programming Dates:

Sept. 22nd   Fall Fitness Day #1      9-11am  Stratton Resort Base Area
Equipment Fitting Day  1-4pm    Stratton Resort Base Area
Oct. 13th     Fall Fitness Day #2      9-11am  Stratton Resort Base Area
Oct. 27th     Fall Fitness Day #3      9-11am  Stratton Resort Base Area

This is the start of my seventh season with SWSC and I'm as excited as ever to push the club to our goal of the #1 club in the USA! My background prior to joining the alpine program at Stratton was with a few different styles of programs. I spent seven years at Stratton Mountain School as the Head J3 coach and oversaw the children’s programs (J3’s, J4’s, DEVO). Prior to SMS, I was the Program Director for the 2004-2005 season with the Wachusett Mountain Race Team. From 1993-2004 I was the Snowsports Director and Head Alpine Coach the New Hampton School in New Hampshire. I started my coaching career at Waterville Valley Academy after finishing my degree in Exercise Science at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire (Go Panthers!).

I'm looking forward to another successful year with the SWSC Alpine Racing Program and am excited for more changes and more big steps forward!

Feel free to email me with questions.
