But before that happens… we have two BIG weekends ahead of us! First this weekend: EASTERN CHAMPS!!!! Next weekend: FREEDOGGER!!!

This weekend many are making the trip up to Sunday River Maine for Eastern Champs. The event will be on Saturday and the Young Gun event will be on Sunday. Coaches will meet anyone interested in a training day on Friday from 1-3. Please meet at 12:30 in the South Ridge Lodge. If anyone is interested in training on Thursday please let me know ASAP through email This email address is being protected from spambots. We start with a costume party at line up at 8:30am, head to World Cup for an anything goes (with in reason) mogul competition, and new this year we will have an afternoon Suntanner component. We will wind down the day with the End of Season Party and Awards Night from 5:00-8:00pm in the Sun Bowl Lodge. Mark your calendars. Current Freestyle/Freeskiing athletes are free, parent cost TBD. Please if anyone has any video or pictures that you would like used in the end of the year video please email them to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. Safe Travels this weekend, Christen, Slater, Jack and I will see those of you heading to the Riv-ah!

Couple of notes from Tim:
Uniforms - We will have uniform orders and sizing happening at the end of season party. After our three year run with Spyder, we will be switching the manufacturers to Helly Hansen. We will also offer a Zipline Mogul Pant with custom SWSC logo to match. Once I have the drawings I will get them out. We did not take the switch lightly, however Spyder is getting out of the team uniform business. The new uniforms will be very high quality and they look great! Black jacket, red pants, very sharp.
Looking further ahead we would like to discuss summer camps opportunities, All Out Freestyle is the preferred summer camp partner of the SWSC Freestyle. We have received confirmation from many of you that you will be attending All Out Freesrtyle's Mt Hood training camp, June 23rd- July 6th. Please visit AllOutFreestyle.com for more information and to register. Bruce and I will be coaching and we will be bringing in some high profile guest coaches as well.
Our thoughts about Mt Hood is that it would be extremely beneficial for us as a team to continue working together on specific skills that we have improved all winter and try to keep establishing upgrades. The long and short of it is, it would be great to have our B team at Mt  Hood this summer to really work on skills and bond as a team. Hood is an awesome time and we are going to have a great staff to work with everyone

Lastly, I would like to give a HUGE shoutout to all of our B team athletes who competed last weekend in the Rod Baird Mogul Challenge here at Stratton!. Finn, Charlie, Tyler, Henry, Nora, Ava, Lexi and Carmen represented our B Team well. All 8 of the athletes really held their own against the A’s and produced some great results. We even had Charlie and Henry make it into the 2nd round of Duals, way to go!!!!

I hope everyone travels up safely this weekend!!

Lesson of the Weekend: Perseverance!

B Team Families-

To start us off, WOW! What an awesome job our athletes did persevering on a very challenging Killington course! Conditions were rock solid in New England this weekend from the downpour of rain everyone got Thursday night and Killington did a great job getting the course up and running for all the bumpers this weekend, kudos to Killington! Our athletes experienced a steeper than normal B-course as well as the ice which caused us to take some tough crashes and deviations from our lines. But as challenging as it was, we took away some great feedback and areas we need to really start to focus on as we press forward into the back-half of our season. Our landing to mogul-line transitions need some cleaning-up, our edge control needs some fine tuning, and our overall stance and posture is always a work in progress. That being said, the positive attitude, support and good sportsmanship for our teammates and other mountains is incredible, as well as all our athlete’s ability to still smile and have fun out there, which is what it’s all about! And now for some results: breaking into the top-10 overall Saturday on the ladies side; Manuella Passaretta in 6th, Ava Chiappinnelli in 8th, and Lexi Kruger in 10th! On the boys side, Finn O’Hanlon in held it down with a 6thplace finish. Great Job! Sunday was a better day for our Stratton skiers overall, with a little bit warmer temps, some snow came down, and a more confident day of skiing overall. Top 10-overall ladies on Sunday were: Maddie Stevenson in 5th, Manuella Passaretta in 6th, and Ava Chiappinelli in 9th. On the boy’s side, we had Luke Kesh-Heil in 8th, and Cosmo Shapiro in 9th. Great job everyone!!!

While some athletes will be hitting the road to Whiteface this weekend, others will look forward to a weekend of training at home as well as some pretty sweet spectating of the NOR-AM event that will take place right in our own backyard! We will be working on our entrance into jumps on Detour and practicing punching our hands out on our landings. We will also be working on our hand positioning through the moguls as well over on Bee Line. But don’t worry we will be taking some breaks from training to head over to World Cup to see the NOR-AM competition in full swing as well! Get excited!!!

For those going to Whiteface the schedule for Saturday and Sunday is as followed:

7:30- Registration

8:00- Group Stretch

8:30- Lift opens

8:50- Course inspection

9:00- Training

10:30- Forerunner

10:35- Competition Starts

Official Schedule can be found on Eastern Freestyle along with training information for those interested on Friday.

Quick Note- Registration for Sugarbush opens tonight at 6:00 P.M!!!

I will see those who will not be competing at Whiteface at Stratton this weekend and good luck to those in Lake Placid this weekend!!

Post Powder Weekend Update

Hello B Team Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed the 11+ inches of powder Stratton was blessed with this weekend. Although the snow came with extremely cold temperatures, athletes made the best of the situation and had a blast skiing with their friends and coaches this past weekend.

This weekend the B Team will be at Killington for the “Killington B Klassic”. There will be NO TRAINING on Friday. The course is on Highline  which is extremely accessible by foot from the K1 lodge.

Saturday and Sunday will be as followed:

7:15-8:30: Registration

7:30: Meet Coaches in K1 Lodge

7:35: Group stretch

7:50: Boot Up

8:00: Lift Opens

8:15: Course Inspection on HIGHLINE

8:30-9:30: Training

9:45: Forerunners

10:00: Competition Starts

Official Schedule can be found here:

Those who are not going to Killington will spend the weekend training with Julia on Detour and Bee Line. These athletes will be continue to work on adding new jump tricks to their toolbelt and staying over the front of their boots while keeping a nice stacked athletic stance .

A select few athletes will be competing at White Face in Lake Placid next weekend. For those who are not heading to Lake Placid, you will spend the weekend getting in some great training and watching some World Class skiing!! Stratton will be hosting a NORAM Event on 10/1-10/3. We have an international field of skiers coming to compete on our Mountain. If you are interested in Volunteering and getting a front row seat please sign up here:

Rod Baird Memorial “A” Comp Information:

According to rule ECS 4.1.7-  The host ski area of an A event is allowed to guarantee a spot for 8 B team athletes into the event.

Based on the results from the Killington Competition, we will be making a decision on Tuesday Night on which 4 boys and 4 girls will be invited to compete in our A Event Feb 9/10th. The top 4 boys from Stratton according to the Eastern Freestyle EQS points list and the top 4 girls from Stratton will receive invitations to compete at this event and are guaranteed a spot.

Note from Eastern Freestyle:

Hunter Mountain has come to the rescue! Thanks, guys! They are going to host Central State Champs on March 2nd - just moguls. Please review championship quota and invite procedures. They are also hosting a warm up mogul event on March 3rd - This is an open event - everyone is invited. Both of these events will be included in the calculations for Young Gun and Junior Championship invitations.

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and we will see everyone this weekend!

What an amazing weekend at the Stevek Mogul Challenge! We had three fun filled days of competition. All of the coaches were impressed with how well the athletes competed over the three days!
First off I would like to say a BIG THANKS to the parents that volunteered this weekend. Parent volunteers are the reason we are able to run one of the best events on the Eastern Freestyle Circuit. So thank you again for all that you do! And a special thanks to Katie Chiappinelli and Sue Stevenson who are our Volunteer Coordinators and make it so our event can go off as smoothly as possible!
We had a great weekend of results for our SWSC athletes on all three days.

Great job to everyone who came out and competed!!!
This weekend we will have excellent training at Stratton for MLK weekend on our Beeline competition venue. There will be program on Monday as well for those who have the day off from school.
We are scheduled to get a huge snowstorm on Saturday thru Sunday and looking at the local forecasts, 2-3 FEET is not out of the question. On the backside of the storm Monday morning low temps are forecast to be -20ºF (without wind chill), if athletes are not prepared, they should stay inside. Use extreme caution with the younger groups especially. Frostbite happens in minutes at these temperatures if you are not careful.
Videos from competitions are available on our Sprongo page for those who would like them. Going back and reviewing your videos is a great learning technique and allows athletes to see how they are skiing and how they can improve. It is something our A Team athletes and coaches do together on a weekly basis. Our Page is called SWSC Freestyle B and can be found here: https://sprongo.com/team/80928/playlists
Important Information:
  • We will have limited staff attending the Whiteface B Event, only for those that missed out on attending Killington. The Whiteface B Event is the same weekend as the FIS Freestyle NorAm at Stratton, and our athletes would get a lot out of seeing these elite skiers compete on our World Cup Trail here at Stratton. Freestyle athletes from all over the world will come to Stratton February 2-3. If you still feel you need to attend Whiteface be sure to set an alarm for Monday at 6:00pm when registration opens.
  • Registration for Killington (1/26 and 1/27) is FULL and waitlist exhausted.
Safe Travels up to Vermont this Weekend!

Please, if you have not signed up yet look through and find something that interests you and sign up!!! The link to sign up is below and you can also find it on the bottom of the SWSC home page. As a parent it is your job on the team to love and support your athlete and volunteering for events is one thing that is mandatory to keep your athlete having a great time in the program. View open positions here:

Note from Tim: We will NOT be attending the Lake Placid/Whiteface event, it not listed on our calendar this year because we are hosting an FIS Freestyle NorAm that weekend, and athletes will want a front row seat to some of the best athletes in Freestyle skiing.

If you’re still reading thanks for getting this far and I hope everyone has a great week ahead and we will see you all this weekend. Thank you in advance for everyone's help in hosting our first event of the season! We can’t wait to see you all there!

SWSC Freestyle B: Happy New Year, Happy Hunting!

SWSC Freestyle B: Happy New Year, Happy Hunting!
Christmas Week Recap:
What a busy week! While the weather didn’t always play to our favor, everyone did a great job making the most of the conditions and got some great training in over the past week! In the beginning of the week, athletes were able to lap Beeline and made great strides in working on their Stance & Posture in the moguls. Athletes took the drills we were performed on the flats, and translated them into the moguls by flexing their ankles, with forward pressure and their knees bent over the front of the boots! The other coaches and myself were very impressed with how much improvement we have seen over the past few weeks on athlete’s Stance & Posture.
We were also able to get some great training days in on Detour during this break. Athletes focused once again on Stance & Posture but how it relates to the take off and the landing of each and every jump. The kids spent a lot of time hiking up Detour working on coming into the jump with forward pressure and their hands in the proper position, staying balanced in the air throughout their trick and lastly, landing in a forward position with their hands forward ready to get back into the moguls. Athletes practiced singles, doubles and even some triples. We also saw a lot of 360’s being added into at least 10 kids tool belts this week! AWESOME!!!!
We had a lot of extracurriculars this past week as well including: Jumping at the SMS Air Awareness Center, Skating Party, Mother Daughter Yoga, and 21 Jump Salute! I hope everyone had fun participating in these events that we LOVE to offer during our Winter Break!

We are mostly headed to HUNTER and a few to BRISTOL this weekend!
If you are headed to Hunter Mountain this weekend you will be joined by Slater, Emma and myself! Training will be on Friday starting at 9 a.m.. You can meet Emma and Slater at the Lodge at 8:45 and they will take you up for training as a group. (Parent tickets are available)
Saturday/Sunday Schedule:
7:15- Registration Opens
7:45 Meet Coaches in the lodge
7:50- Group Stretch
8:15- Get boots on and ready to go
8:30- Lift Opens
8:45-9:45 Training
10:00- Forerunners
10:15-Competition starts
If you're headed to Bristol, you will be joined by Jack and Constantyn. (Only for B Team Athletes with A Team siblings)

Training will also be held on Friday. You can meet your coaches in the lodge at 1 p.m. to go up to the course as a group. (Parent tickets are available)

Saturday/Sunday Schedule
7:30- Registration opens
7:45- Meet coaches in the Lodge
7:50- Group Stretch
8:15- Boot up
8:30- Lift Opens
8:40-9:50 Training
10:05- Forerunners
10:15- Competition Starts
For everyone competing this weekend, remember you are responsible for being on time for your run! If you are using Friday as a training day make sure you are making the most out of your time. This means using your training runs to ski all the lines and picking the one that best suits you. Also use this time to dial in on your tricks and pick TWO DIFFERENT tricks to perform in your competition runs.
If you are not competing this weekend it will be business as usual back at Stratton where you will work on turns and lines and edging. Good luck to everyone this weekend!
Safe Travels to wherever you are headed!

SWSC Freestyle B: Here Come The Holidays!

SWSC Freestyle B: Here Come The Holidays!
Congratulations B Team!
Wow, what a fantastic opening competition season we had at Okemo, VT this past weekend!  Thank you all so much for your hard work and efforts throughout the day! And, nice job to all for being patient and cool-headed while we experienced some timing issues and competition glitches. We had 40 plus B-team athletes there both days, way to represent Stratton!
On day one of Okemo, we had Nora in 5th, Carmen in 6th, and Manuela in 9th. On the boys side, Luke came in 7th and George 10th. On day two of Okemo, the weather tried to hinder our spirts, but we prevailed. On the ladies side Nora was 3rd, Alexa was 4th, and Carmen 7th! On the boy’s side, our top-10 were: Tyler in 2nd, Luke 6th, Finnegan 7th, and Ali 10th! Great job to everyone that took part, the camaraderie and sportsmanship on the team is fantastic! While we had the majority of athletes competing on the Plunge at Okemo, athletes that stayed home continued to train and make big improvements towards our next competition at Hunter!
This Weekend:
JUMPING! Our main focus for the B Team this weekend will be jumping, Detour is built and ready for the B Team to fly! There are 4 components of jumping that we will be talking about: Approach, Take Off, Maneuver, and Landing. Each of these components are an important step in having successful jumps. We will focus heavily on the approach and take off. And guess what? It all relates back to Stance and Posture. Athletes will have jumps to practice on all weekend and get the correct approach and take off squared away so that come the Holiday week, we can learn and execute some new tricks.
Stance & Posture must still be clearly in focus. This is something we continue to preach, practice, and perform on a weekly basis while training on flats, moguls, jumping, during warm-up routines, etc.  We will continue to take the skills we discussed (knees bent over the front of our bindings, ankles flexed, shins pressed in the front of our boots and standing tall) and relate them to Turns & Line, Absorption & Extension, and Jumping.
Here are several things coming up on the SWSC Freestyle schedule:

7:55am - Ready to go up the lift for 8:00am

Please view the official schedule here for more details: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xa77A4_x45XS3ZnqgrVX59pR7mkQGWhWWQmIOv-s0fo/edit?usp=sharing Please note that Okemo may change the schedule at anytime.
**Athletes, it is your responsibility to know when you are going in the run order and to be ready at the top of the course at least 15 minutes before your run to get ready and talk with a coach** If you are not sure please ask a friend or a coach how it works.
Athletes should come to the competition ready to go with a game plan set for what two (different)  tricks they will be doing and what they want to focus on during their few training runs. Tricks should be something that they worked on last weekend, or know how to already do. Also the competition will not be cancelled due to weather, usually the only thing that cancels a competition is the lift not opening. If the weather is not nice, please allow extra time to arrive at Okemo.
There will be training on Friday for those who are interested and who are doing well in school. Tim and Stewart will be there. Training will be from 1-3 on Friday afternoon. You can meet Tim and Stewart at the base lodge around 12:15 for a quick warm up and then to head to the course all together.
For those of you B Teamers staying in Stratton this weekend, you will be lead by Coach Julia who will continue working on Stance & Posture and relating it to skiing moguls AND jumping. Tim has been hard at work this week on hill at Stratton and we should have Beeline and Detour opening up this weekend.
No matter what mountain you are skiing at this weekend, you can expect some great skiing and a great time. Safe Travels to everyone and enjoy the rest of your week!

SWSC Freestyle B: Opening Weekend Success!

SWSC Freestyle B: Opening Weekend Success!
B Team Families,

What a weekend! It was great to see so many of you out and ready to go Saturday morning! The skiing on Saturday was better than we could have ever asked for, considering it was December 1st. Athletes did a great job getting right back into the swing of things and coaches were able to start Stance & Posture drills right away. For those of you that ventured out into the rain for Sunday, we were still able to get some good training in and continued practicing our athletic stance, while making sure our knees were out over our front bindings and using ankle flexion to initiate the turn.

This weekend:
Stance & Posture is still our main focus. This is something we are going to be hammering into the athletes' minds over the next few weekends while training on flats until we have our mogul venue up and running. This coming weekend, we are going to take the skills we discussed (knees bent over the front of our bindings, ankles FLEXED, shins pressed in the front of our boots and standing tall) and relate them with jumping. We will be spending time in Tyro Park practicing coming into jumps in a balanced position, after staying balanced in the air during both the maneuver and landing. Working on Stance & Posture and executing these drills on the flats will help us transition these skills into the mogul course at the upcoming Okemo competition. Tim might have a little surprise, depending on how the weather shapes up this week, too.

Our first competition will be held in two weeks (December 15th and 16th) at Okemo. It's an easy day trip from Stratton and athletes are encouraged to sign up! Registration will open Thursday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. on the easternfreestyle.org website. Make sure you’re on a computer at 6:00pm to sign up your athlete as this competition will fill up quickly! Your child must have an ACTIVE US Ski and Snowboard competitor license in order to register.

Thank you to all of the parents who came out Saturday night to our parent presentation at the Black Bear Lodge; it was great to see you! Congratulations to Jenny Brown for winning a sweet new pair of Faction Mogul skis that we gave away at the event.
Have safe drive up this weekend and we can’t wait for some more training!

SWSC Freestyle B: Snovember to Remember!

SWSC Freestyle B: Snovember to Remember!

Hello B Team Families!

We can’t believe the season starts this weekend! The program will start this Saturday, December 1st. All athletes are expected to be at the Freestyle flag by 8:25 so that we can organize everyone into their appropriate groups and be ready to roll by 8:30. We will train until 11:30 and then break for lunch. Athletes should be back at the Freestyle flag at 12:25 for our afternoon session which will go until 3:00. Please make a plan with your child about where they should go at 3:00 or if they should wait by the flag with a coach to be picked up!

This weekend (and in the weekends coming) we will have a heavy focus on Stance & Posture. This means getting the athletes standing on the balls of their feet with their knees bent over the front of their binding and having good ankle flexion. Everything we work on during the season stems from this idea of being in an athletic stance. By driving this idea home in the beginning of the season and getting the athletes in the correct position early on, we are able to build off of this important foundation and begin introducing other skills into our skiing.

Following our first day, there will be an Après Ski and Parent Presentation from 4:00-6:00pm in the Black Bear Lodge. From 4:00-5:00 we will be downstairs in Table 43.1 restaurant. At 5:00 we will move upstairs for our parent presentation lead by our Program Director Tim Massucco where we will discuss what is new this season!

We can’t wait to see both you and your athletes this weekend and to get the season rolling!

SWSC Freestyle B: Happy Thanksgiving and Welcome Home!

SWSC Freestyle B: Happy Thanksgiving and Welcome Home!
Parents and Athletes,
Welcome back! With the first weekend of the program right around the corner, December 1st & 2nd, I wanted to take a minute to welcome all of our B Team athletes and parents back to the crazy and exciting world of Stratton Winter Sports Club. I am very excited to be taking on the role of Head B Coach this season and getting to work with both the athletes and the parents to provide a memorable and fulfilling season for everyone!

As we dive into training in the coming weeks, I wanted to briefly outline our main topics for the season: Stance & Posture, Turns & Lines, Absorption & Extension, and Jumping. Each weekend, coaches and athletes will focus on one of these topics by executing drills on flats, then take the skills learned into the moguls. The weekend of December 1st & 2nd, athletes can expect to dive right into talking about stance and posture with their coaches as that is the base that everything we do. We will continue to hammer on this base skill all season. With a solid understanding of Stance & Posture, we can build a foundation as we move onto other topics later in the season.

Some important reminders:
Our program starts Saturday, December 1st  at 8:20am.
We will go until 11:30 and take an hour long break for lunch. We start up again at 12:25 and go until 3:00. There will be an Après Ski Cocktail Party and Parent Presentation December 1st from 4:00-6:00pm at Table 43.1/Wentworth in the Black Bear Lodge. ALL uniform distribution will happen during this event.

I can’t wait to see everyone next Saturday, December 1st, and to get this season rolling!
Happy Thanksgiving!
