Welcome to 2018-2019 Season!

Welcome to 2018-2019 Season!

Parents & Athletes,

November is here! We are one month out and the coaching staff would like to welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 season! I have spent a lifetime at Stratton and I have never been more proud of our mountain, the sport we love and the team WE have created around a genuine community. We have many exciting changes coming this season that all happened because you LOVE our mountain, our sport, and our community!

The biggest addition is hosting the Stratton FIS Freestyle NorAm Cup, this event is the second most important Freestyle event in the Eastern United States this winter, only behind the FIS Freestyle World Cup. We are bringing the world to Stratton the first weekend in February where some of the best Freestyle skiers will test their luck against the challenging World Cup Trail. We anticipate about 8 athletes from the Stratton community will be competing!

We have completely changed the Stevek Mogul Challenge format to accommodate most everyone on the Freestyle & Allegro Teams. Last year many got shut out of the thrill of experiencing competition, an important stepping stone in our program. With that in mind we went to the Spring Eastern Freestyle meeting, got the necessary approvals and will host three full days of competition January 11-13. Friday will be an open event for any gender. Saturday will be restricted to Girls only and Sunday will be Boys only. This will allow us to get over 200 athletes through the event.

We have some staffing changes this year as Sam Johnston will be taking over the B Team Head Coach position. Sam has been in our Freestyle community for 13 years and spends her professional life in the Boston area as Elementary School teacher. Sam is very organized, detail oriented, and will add tremendous value to our world class program. Jameson has moved out to Utah to pursue other opportunities with-in the ski industry, and we wish him well.

Dillon Lovell moves up the ranks from Allegro Freeskiing program to the Freeskiing Comp Team Supervisor. Stratton Junior School instructors Timothy Velsor and Jackson Stein will get promoted this season and help Dillon facilitate the Freeskiing component in Allegro. I will add Freeskiing Program Director to my title as well. The experience our Freeskiing coaches have runs deep and we are excited to see continued growth in Freeskiing at Stratton. We wish Brian Knowles well on his new position as the Freeskiing/Freestyle Program Director at Mount Snow's weekend program.

Many have asked for sweatshirts and other logo wear, and we are happy to announce that SWSC sweatshirts, t-shirts, Big Truck hats, pint glasses, coffee mugs, stickers, etc. can all be found at the Stratton Clothing Store in the village right now! We are also working on a team Black Strap neck tube that should be available by the holiday break.

The retail department also wanted us to pass along a note that team uniforms are on schedule for distribution at the beginning of the season (December 1 at the Parent Presentation) and you should have recently seen a charge from Stratton your credit card, if you purchased a uniform. The US Ski Team Freestyle squad is all decked out in Spyder gear this season, and so are we! If you missed the uniform order window back in March, I do have a wait list running, it will be first come first serve for the VERY FEW uniform pieces left over after distribution happens. If you are new to the program, we order uniforms in March for delivery in November. This is done so all embroidery happens pre-production to maintain water repellency, warmth and overall integrity.

All athletes with prior year US Ski & Snowboard/USASA memberships should have received about 3 emails to renew their memberships over the off season from US Ski & Snowboard or USASA, if you have not done so, please handle it now. NEW members, I will put out a post early December on how to go about getting signed up for the appropriate membership if taking part in competitions.

Other program enhancements include a new office upstairs in the Mountain Sports School building; the purchase of 25 new radios so our coaching staff will be able to better communicate around the mountain and maintain safer training venues; a new mobile timing trailer roof and interior for the Stevek Mogul Challenge; and 600 meters of fence will round out our wish list this year to make our venues the sharpest looking venues on tour!

Once again, welcome back your winter home! We are really excited to get this program rolling this winter and mark your calendars for our Parent Apres-ski and Presentation at the Black Bear Lodge on December 1st starting at 4:00pm!

All The Best,

Tim Massucco

SWSC Freestyle/Freeskiing Program Director
